2020 was a year that no one could have predicated and continues to haunt much of the world today. As we start to reach our hands up through the rubble of the last year and plan for recovery we are faced with uncertainty, hesitation and trepidation. We are however also presented with great opportunity, an opportunity to hit the reset button, innovate and do things better. We can design the future we have always wanted.
The visitor economy is one of the most resilient industries to exist, there is no doubt we will rebound and the early visitor spend data shows us this. My biggest fear is that we jump back into old habits.
COVID-19 has forced great innovation within the industry to adapt and survive. For those lucky enough to stay afloat, it's been a time to work on your business rather than in it. We've seen technology come to the forefront and consumers adopt these changes - I now book in advance to dine out, even for breakfast. Hand sanitisers are now readily available in every shop. We've also seen businesses become more socially conscious and appreciate their customers more than ever. Consumers are now exploring their local neighborhood more, building local pride and supporting local businesses.
As Churchill said 'never let a crisis go to waste.'
We need to challenge our thinking especially in the tourism industry and go beyond the bottom line to consider how we are all working to better the people, communities and destinations that we all so heavily rely upon to survive and thrive and whom have been so deeply impacted from this crisis.
Right now, a strong recovery requires collaboration, thought and care for one another. We all need to work together towards a greater purpose.
